Leslie Charteris trained as a furniture maker and subsequently as a paintings and decorative arts restorer/conservator and ran own conservation business.
After 15 years in business took up post in 1982 as Senior Lecturer in Furniture Making at the London College of Furniture. Whilst there devised and ran the first HND programme in Furniture Restoration and Conservation in the UK.
Subsequently, as Head of Furniture at City of London Polytechnic developed and taught the worlds first BSc.(hons) Decorative Arts Conservation course.
In 1994 returned to private practice in London undertaking conservation consultancy and restoration/conservation of historic interiors, decorative arts and fine art objects for a wide variety of clients including;
English Heritage, Historic Royal Palaces Agency, National Museums, Churches, Royal Armouries and Private Collections.
The work undertaken was very diverse involving easel & panel paintings, furniture, sculpture (wood, metal and marble), arms & armour, gilding, carving, interior woodwork & metalwork, insect pest surveys and disaster control measures.
As a member of the United Kingdom Institute for Conservation (UKIC) he was a founder member of the Gilding Section and was involved in organising Conservation Conferences in London and abroad. He has also run CPD training events for professional conservators and UKIC members which were attended by conservators from all over the world. He has presented papers at international conservation conferences and has published in professional conservation journals.
